CAMP- I   MOVE   TO  TERRA   NOVA
In late August we are preparing to move Camp-I from the Shoal Harbour gravel pit to Terra
Nova. Terra Nova was about 30 miles on north of Shoal Harbour. At Terra Nova the camp
would become Camp-III as Camp-II was still in operation at Port Blanford. This move took
more than one day and I don't remember the number. There were no roads out of the gravel
pit and Terra Nova had no roads into it so everything was loaded and moved by our two
speeders and trailers. I do remember that the crew I was on was left behind for a short time to
clean up the Camp-I site. The following photos will show some of the loads required to move
camp. All photos were taken by Jerome Young.
In this view the trailers are loaded and
ready to head north with a load for new
Camp-III. A good view of the rail spur
that was installed by the section crew
from Clarenville. The gravel pit is in the
background.
It is early morning with a light mist
hanging behind Camp-I. The speeder
trailers are loaded with packed up huts
and camp stoves stacked on top. The
load is heavy so both speeders are
double headed for the pull north. T/Sgt
Wilkerson, Rideout, and Ben Craft are
gathered at the speeder. Braswell is
walking towards the camera and the
other airmen are looking for places to
sit on top of the loaded trailers.
Another early morning load ready to
head north for Terra Nova. A big load
of duffel bags are on that last trailer.
That is William Brennan standing next
to the speeder. Harold Peffer is
standing behind him.
Jerome was standing on a railroad
flat car when he took this shot. The
trailers are again loaded with boxes
that hold the folded up huts. To the
right of the speeder we can see that
only one generator is in place so the
other is at new Camp-III for electrical
power. T/Sgt Wilkerson is standing on
the second speeder.
Nearly ready to leave for Camp-III.
To the extreme left is Ben Craft with his
back to the camera. To the right is
Norm Simons with a shovel on his
shoulder. These two along with Jerome,
Emmitt Martin, Eddie George and
Scharnweber would stay to clean up
the camp site.
In this view the camp is being
dismantled. The shower tent stood in
the open space on the right across the
tracks.
