| WILDCAT RAILROAD |

| The Wildcat Railroad does not follow any specific prototype. I did try to keep the time period between the 1920's and 30's. The plan was taken from Linn H.Westcott's book "101 Track Plans." After constructing two or three layouts I finally settled on this one in 1983. Over the years I added two extensions on each end, Hoover Station on one and Witburn Station on the other. Grand Trunk Western serves Hoover Station and makes freight and passenger runs between Hoover and Witburn Station. The rest of the layout is served by the Wildcat Railroad working out of Witburn and Mitchell yards. The bench work is the "L" girder type using 3/4in. plywood for the base and 5/8in. particle board for the subroadbed. I used 1/4in. luan plywood for the ballast board. All track is hand laid with code 70 rail. I used plaster on wire screen for scenery. I started out with cab control and converted to DCC in July, 2000. Doug Smith had an article in Dec.,1961 Model Railroader on using car cards for freight forwarding and I use this on the Wildcat Railroad. The photographs were taken with a Pentax K-1000 with a 50mm lens. Merritt B. Scharnweber November, 2003 |
