Two views of Scharnweber near Camp-I hanging a cross arm on
the newly set pole. The photo on the right shows him installing the
"glass" on the cross arm pins. The cross arm braces will be "lagged"
to the pole, the open wire tied to the glass and last, the telephone
cable will be raised and fastened to a new bolt.
Both Photos, Joe Louie
Ben Craft has just raised the cable to its new
attachment bolt. In this scene Ben used a Coffin
hoist to raise the cable. Coffin hoists were used
for extra heavy lifts. Jerome Young photo.
From atop a pole Jerome Young
captured Norm Simons on the next pole,
with help from an unknown airman,
raising the telephone cable to its new
attachment bolt. Norm is using a set of
blocks on this job.
Here is Norm Simons, our crew chief,
finishing up a transfer job. The set of
blocks hanging from his belt were used
to raise the telephone cable.

From Don McCarron's photos we have
Bill Lewis hanging the cross arm while
Don is working on the telephone cable
end of this transfer.

I can remember after my first few days at camp when I had a bad experience on the job. I was to remove the
telephone cable from the old pole. I wasn't aware that there was a slight up grade on the pole that I was working on. I
was going to drop the cable off its attachment bolt and let the cable rest on my buck strap. Then I was going to climb
down the pole with the cable resting on my buck strap. When I pulled the cable off the bolt it drop down onto my
buck strap with such force it buried my spikes into the pole and the weight was so great I couldn't bend my legs to
come down the pole. Fortunately, Ben Craft, who was working on the ground below me, saw what was happening.
He hurriedly strap on his climbers, picked up a set of blocks and hurried up the pole I was on. He then hooked one
end of the blocks to the cross arm above me and the other end to the cable resting on my buck strap. He then raised
the cable off my belt which allowed me to move my legs. We then lowered the cable down with the rope blocks.
