McANDREW AFB OUR HEADQUARTERS

On the road from St. Johns we view the base gate into McAndrew AFB. McAn- drew was named for Major James W. McAndrew Chief of Staff of the American Expeditionary Forces of World War I.

On the right is building 100, Headquarters for McAndrew Air Force Base. Jerome Young photograph.

McAndrew AFB dock. 1st. Comm. Const. Sq. was unloaded here. The Moore-Mcormack ship would show up here about once a month.
A view of 1st. Comm. Constr. Sq. barracks, Blg.108. Our bunks were on the top floor. Orderly room and day room were on the first floor. Supply was in the basement where the double doors are.
A view towards Argentia Naval Station from our barracks. Two ships, the S.S.Baccalien and the S.S.Bar Haven, provided steamship service from Argentia to North Sidney, Nova Scotia. One of these ships is coming into dock in this photograph. A closer view and description of this photograph on page-3.

One morning on arising this floating dry dock had showed up in the night at Argentia Naval Station. Placentia Bay is in the background.

Canadian National track to St.Johns, 75 miles away. Note the stub switch. The gauge of the railroad in Newfoundland was 3'-6". The railroad in Newfoundland was ripped up in 1988. At this date, winter 1952, a triweekly train ran from St.Johns to Argentia. To the right of the track on the hill is the 920th AC&W radar site. Winds of over 100 m.p.h. have been recorded at this site. Also to the right is the base gym. Nick Lalinga, who was one of those in the 920th and was on the McAndrew basketball team, mentioned in an email to me on the 23rd of May, 2007 how the wind had twisted their radar antenna and bent it into the shape of a pretzel in early 1952. The photo on the left is a closer view of the 920th AC&W radar site on the hill behind McAndrew.

I took two of my slides and made a panoramic view of McAndrew AFB and Argentia Naval Station. Shag Pond is in the foreground and the road to St. Johns is on the right. We were on our way back from a hiking trip to Placentia on this day. Joe Louie and Billy Andrews are walking on the extreme right.
