JEROME   AT   MILE   POST - 137
When I drove out to Iowa in April of 2005 to visit Jerome, he came up with a roll of black & white
film that he had never made prints from. He did not remember any details of where it was taken. It
turns out this roll was one of his first taken at Camp-I. When I arrived back home and made some
prints from the negatives I was at a loss as to where these were taken. On examining one of the
prints there was a mile post marker fastened to one of the telephone poles with the number 137
printed on it. This put the crews at just about two miles north of Camp-I at the Shoal Harbour gravel
pit. Running along beside the railroad and the pole line at this point is the Shoal Harbour river. New
poles have been set and the crews are busy transferring the cable to the new "black jacks."
A little bit further north of the photo with the MP marker, Jerome captured the squadron mascot
"Tip" doing some hunting.
Gelford Cook has just unbuckled his buck strap to come down the pole. Billy Lewis is facing the
camera. Newfoundland has fantastic scenery and here along the Shoal Harbour river with the
rushing water and all, this is a nice spot to work.
Norm Simons and Ben Craft are unloading a new pole in this view. LeRoy Hawco is the speeder
operator. Sitting on the right is M/Sgt.Annible. The airman next to him is unknown. It looks as
though the railroad is doing some ballast work here.
Standing on the speeder is Ben Craft. Standing in front of him facing the camera is T/Sgt. Wilkerson
Norm Simons in the background with Eddie George on the right. Emblazoned on the front of the
speeder is the name Kalamazoo.
