TEMPORARY  DUTY  AT  NARSARSSUAK, GREENLAND
On May 20,1953, I and three other
airman received orders to report to
Narsarssuak AFB, Greenland for
temporary duty. From left: A/2c John
Sullivan, Staff Sgt. James Pickens,
A/1c Robert Hosier and A/1c M.
Scharnweber. We are leaving
McAndrew AFB. for Pepperrall
AFB, St.Johns to catch a flight out of
 Torbay Airport.
We hadn't been on the road to St.
Johns very long when we had a flat
tire. There were a couple of army
fellows with us hitching a ride to
Pepperrell AFB.
About twenty miles from St. Johns,
we stopped to check out this iceberg
that had floated into Conception Bay.
View of our plane on our arrival at
Narsarssuack AFB. This four
engine transport is a C-54
Skymaster. Note our two small tool
trailers near the rear of the plane
which came with us. The base had
built a new fire house around a
telephone cable lead and we were
to make a cable section throw so
the old cable could be removed.
This sign greeted us when we got
off the plane.
An iceberg floating in the bay at
Narsarssuak. The ocean is off
to the far left out of sight.

some small bergs left stranded
on shore. The end of the runway
is to the right of this photo out of
sight.
The reason for being sent to
Narsarssuak. The new fire house
was built around the telephone
cable lead. We had to make a
section throw, so the old cable
could be removed from the
building.
Our orders for temporary duty at
Narsarssuak. Lots of abreviations!!!
