St. Johns Winter 1953-54
The photographs on this page were taken by Jerome Young while working on the Long Lines out of Pepperrell
AFB. The photo on the left is a hotel that had a tavern where we would have a few beers off the shelf on Saturday
afternoon and evenings. The photo on the right was taken at the same time with a view further down the street.
View of Cabot Tower from St. Johns
proper.
Unknown structure in St. Johns.
Aug.23,2005 Ron Penny sent
me an email with some history
on this structure.
"This is the Colonial Building
which was the seat of
Government in Newfoundland
before our confederation with
Canada in 1949. It is located on
Military Road and is used as the
Newfoundland Archives after
Government was transferred to
a new building."
My thanks to Ron Penny.
Canadian National railroad station.
Looking across Quidi Vidi Lake from
Pepperrell AFB is Cabot Tower where
Marconi received his first wireless message
from across the Atlantic Ocean.
Jerome took this view towards Cabot Tower,
which is just above the railroad spur.
At the site of Cabot Tower, Jerome captures
M/Sgt. Annibal's Hudson car. This site is where
Marconi received the first wireless signal from
across the Atlantic on Dec.12, 1901. The
entrance to St. Johns harbour is to the right of
this photo.
Two views towards the St. Johns harbour.
June 26,2004, John Michel of San Antonio, Texas sent me these two photographs he took in St. Johns.
John was also stationed at McAndrew AFB. He was assigned to 6610 Air Base Group from February,
1952 to December, 1953.
