THULE   CABLE   SPLICERS
Thule Mountain
On October 10, 1952, orders were cut for Drumheller, Pickens, Burke and
Scharnweber to report to Thule AFB, Greenland to splice telephone cable. We
were flown to Goose Bay, Labrador where we laid over waiting for a flight to
Thule. While there Drumheller ran into a friend of his who happened to be the
base photographer for Goose Bay and he took our photograph.
From left - James Pickens, Curtiss Drumheller, Scharnweber and James Burke.
I don't recall the photographer's name.
The only photo I have of our work at
Thule AFB. At this time of the year it is
dark 24 hours. Pickens and I are loaded
up and headed for South Mt. to work on
the telephone cable that ran along the
road from Thule AFB to South Mt. We
have been issued special white boots for
the cold. Drumheller and Burke were
working on the telephone cable that went
up to North Mt. I remember those B-36
bombers taking off late at night with
an awful noise and vibrating the barracks.
They had three aircraft motors with
pusher props on each wing plus a jet pod
on each wing tip.
