Dayton Moses Honor Guard
Before Dayton Moses was assigned to 1st. Communications Construction Squadron in Newfoundland,
he was stationed at Ellsworth AFB at Rapid City, South Dakota. On March 18, 1953, a RB-36
bomber crashed near Burgoyne's Cove, inland from a place called Nut Cove in Smith's Sound,
Newfoundland. All 23 crew members were killed. One of these was Brig. General Richard E. Ellsworth.
In this photograph dated June 13,1953, the ceremonies are taking place in the renaming of Rapid City
Air Force Base to Ellsworth AFB. Dayton Moses, who was one of the honor guards, describes the
scene:
"That is President Eisenhower. On his left is the General of the Air Force, and SAC commander
General Curtiss E. LeMay is in the back.....I don't forget LeMay."
"The RB-36 was parked in front of the base operations building at Ellsworth. Eisenhower was there for
the name change. I was an honor guard, the fourth shadow on the left."
