May 12, 2005 Camp-I at Goobies and Rantem Wye
On September 13, 2004, I had wrote on UpDates Page-1 that the Squadron had put up new camps in the spring of 1954. Flight #1 was at Goobies and Flight #2 set up a camp at Avondale. As I and Jerome Young were in Flight #1, we received orders to leave Pepperrell AFB on May 13, 1954 to report to Camp-I at Goobies. We had been at Pepperrell AFB the past winter rebuilding the Long Lines west of Pepperrell AFB. My tour of duty in Newfoundland was up in July. I than left Camp-I at Goobies and reported back to McAndrew AFB to return to the United States. Jerome stayed at Goobies and later in the summer the flight moved camp to Rantem Wye, twenty three miles south of Goobies. Jerome rotated back to the United States from Rantem Wye. In April of this year, 2005, I drove out to Iowa to visit Jerome. He had found some slides that he had taken at Camp-I at Goobies and Rantem Wye, which I had not seen. The following photos are some of these slides.

This scene of Camp-I at Goobies greeted us as we drove in from Pepperrell AFB. The camp was on fairly level ground with lots of short pine trees. The main road to Clarenville past on one side of camp.

Just to the right of center is the two generators, one main and one stand by.

View of the cooks tent. The freezers are standing to the right of the tent.

After work was completed at Goobies, Camp-I was moved to Rantem Wye shown here in this photo. Camp was located on the tail of the wye so it was easy for the speeders to operate in either direction. The main line of the railroad runs north and south in this view. It is early morning and Jerome has captured the crews gathering at the speeders to head out for work. The wooden fence in the back ground keeps snow from drifting on the railroad. Camp was located on a hill that ran up to the main road to Clarenville that also ran north and south at this point. Rantem Wye was at Mile Post 87.03 from St. Johns.
A panoramic view of Rantem Wye by joining two of Jerome's slides. The tail of the wye is between the tents and the huts in the foreground. The two legs of the wye run to the left towards the main line which runs north and south in this photo. The two supply tents are on the left of the mess and cook tents.

This photograph was made by putting two of Jeromes slides together for a panoramic view of camp. At the right is the main road to Clarenville with a short access road coming down into camp running along the tail of the wye, past the freezers on the extreme left and ending at the supply tents shown in the proceeding photo. The group of buildings on the left of center in the background is the station of Rantem.

Jerome captured these four airmen leveling the ground for the mess tent. The snow fence in the back ground helps to keep the drifts off the railroad track. At the left of the four airmen is S/Sgt.Tucker. The two airmen in the middle are unknown. John Street is leaning on the shovel.

Jerome standing by his 6x6 at Rantem Wye. The airman without his shirt is Domenick Iacovelli. The other airman is unknown.
